Show & Tell 12

S&T12

Thursday 2nd December, 2010, studiofilmclub, at 8:15 pm

This is our final Show & Tell for the year, and our friends over at studiofilmclub have opened their doors for this serious Kingston showdown. Come and check out a decade of Jamaican cultural documentation through digital, photography, music, video, and writing. As a contemporary Caribbean artist, Peter is comfortable in all realms of expression.

Jamaican-born Rickards is known for a lot of things. The creator of First - a locally published print magazine - and Kingston Signals, a live streaming music coverage in Jamaica’s early days of internet access. He is globally recognised and respected for his blog – The Afflicted Yard.  Since 1999, it has been the independent online magazine dedicated to a ‘street level’ view of Jamaican culture via creative writing, art, photography, videography and public exhibitions.

Rickards will be showing us his most captivating and thought-provoking work before showing in Gavin Brown’s Gallery in New York City.

Join us for this year’s final Show & Tell party and enjoy sudiofilmclub’s amazing cocktail bar.

On board with us for this special edition of yard tunes is
DJ Attillah.

Spread the word and come down to be a part of the Evolution of Sound pre-concert vibes.

Show & Tell 11: Tech_Styles

tech_styles
Friday November 12th, 2010 8:15 pm

Feeling flooded with the day to day grind? Why not get away from it all and come down to our next instalment of Show and Tell. This month we are looking forward to being taken on a virtual spin by two presenters deeply involved in the new digital way.

Sharleen Chin
Sharleen Chin, Marketing and Public Relations Manager for Meiling, is one of only twenty people in the Caribbean with expertise in the realm of virtual worlds.

A.K.A Chigadee London, she is the premier hat designer in Second Life and her three year old virtual business (Couture Chapeau) is a successful, but tiny drop in a multi-billion dollar, cutting-edge industry. Sharleen makes a comfortable living selling virtual hats in a virtual world, playing her part in a new type of career. These immersive worlds have been used by corporate giants for several years now as educational, communication, commercial, public relation and fundraising tools and they are set to keep on growing.

“You are only limited by your imagination” says Sharleen, adding that “it is perhaps one of the most creative platforms ever available to anyone.”

Mark Lyndersay
Computer enhanced, digitally enabled photographer and technology writer Mark Lyndersay explores the nexus of the creative process and digital technologies from his perspective as a technology columnist and professional photographer. Mark began his digital journey as a photographer in 1990 with the first commercial copy of Photoshop (1.07) at the Trinidad Guardian.

As he puts it, “I saw the clone tool and that was it. I knew my career would be changing right then and there.”

Lyndersay has worked as a photographer and journalist in Trinidad and Tobago since 1976 and his column on personal technology, BitDepth, has been published continuously since 1995.

Spread the word, admission is free.

Drinks are on the house thanks to Red Bull, Brydens and Island Beers who have supplied us with energy, vino and an excellent range of English ales (don’t forget to tip your server!).

DJ K-Lik is here for the afterparty with fine future sounds, so stick around afterwards.

Doors open at 6:30pm.

See you there!

Show & Tell 10: Visual Swim

S&T10

Reminder - This Friday Abovegroup presents
Show & Tell 10: Visual Swim

Friday, August 27th 2010 from 7:00 p.m.

This Friday is shaping up to be another exciting evening as we celebrate our tenth Show & Tell!

An evening filled with both hand-crafted and visual-digital design. We are stoked to have surfboard maker Alan Davis and photographer / digital artist Laura Ferreira present.

Laura starts off the night by opening the doors to the complex mind of a uniquely quirky artist, who shows us our world through her eyes.

Alan then takes the stage to share his experience in the sub-culture of surfing and how it has shaped him as a surfboard designer.

DJ Shy Guy will be spinning some funky grooves, so don’t forget to bring your dancing shoes for the after party.

Thanks again to our friends at Bryden’s who help us out with some of their Chilean wine and also to Red Bull who pull through by providing us with wings to last out the evening. (err… donations are still welcome)

Spread the word, admission is free.

Please note 7.00 p.m. start time. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

See you there,

Show & Tell 9: Embah & the Dragon

S&T9
Friday, June 25th 2010 from 7:00pm

Too much perspiration and not enough inspiration? Come on over for our latest Show & Tell. This month we are honoured to have two presenters who will leave you thinking about where we came from and where we are headed.

Embah
Emheyo Bahabba, aka Embah, has been actively involved in the Trinidadian art scene for many years. What isn’t commonly known is that Embah began as a writer of poetry and lyrics. He employs a rich, highly complex visual vocabulary that offers commentary on our culture. His artwork is often a visual manifestation of his poetry and other written works. Embah will share some of his visual work and prose in a presentation entitled We Are Still Dreaming. In his own words:

“ If we lose the dream then we lose the purpose which is to fulfill the dream. After more than forty years of involvement in cultural development related to drama, writing and visual art I am still dreaming”.

Glen ‘Dragon’ De Souza
Moko Jumbies or stilt walkers were not always featured so heavily in Trinidad Carnival. Master stilt walker, Dragon, has taken it upon himself to teach the youths this ancient art form and has founded the Keylemanjahro School of Arts and Culture. Dragon’s school is devoted to the art and performance of Moko Jumbie. Aside from Trinidad Carnival year after year, Keylemanjahro’s renowned performers have made appearances throughout the Diaspora and have been featured on PBS’s Sesame Street, Stefan Falke’s Moko Jumbies-The Dancing Spirits of Trinidad and a recent documentary by Harald Rumpf Up and Dancing-The Magic Stilts of Trinidad.

Who are these Moko Jumbies? Where do they come from and what drives them to practice the art form? Dragon will take us to new heights with his presentation.

Spread the word, admission is free.

As usual, the donation bar is open (for drinks and donations!) DJ Tracy Assing (yes!) will but putting down some new tunes for the afterparty. Thanks again to Red Bull for their continued support.

Please note the start time. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Hope you can make it!

Show & Tell Special: Journalist Michael Deibert on Haiti

S&T8

If you think that things are tough here, why not come count your blessings at Abovegroup for this special instalment of
Show & Tell?

Michael Deibert / Journalist

Michael Deibert’s writing on Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe has appeared in The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, Folha de Sao Paulo, Le Monde Diplomatique, The Miami Herald and the World Policy Journal, among other venues.

Having previously served as the Reuters and Economist Intelligence Unit correspondent in
Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Mr. Deibert has been a featured commentator on international affairs on the BBC, Al Jazeera, Channel 4, National Public Radio, and WNYC New York Public Radio. Mr. Deibert’s first book, Notes from the Last Testament: The Struggle for Haiti (Seven Stories Press, 2005) was praised by the Miami Herald as “a powerfully documented exposé” and by the San Antonio Express-News as “a compelling mix of reportage, memoir and social criticism.”

In 2008, Mr. Deibert was named as a finalist for the Kurt Schork Award in International Journalism, sponsored by the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, for his work in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In his current role as a Visiting Fellow at the the Centre for Peace and Reconciliation Studies at Coventry University, which promotes processes of reconciliation by non-violent means at all levels throughout the world, Mr. Deibert aids the Centre in its mission to increase and sustain dialogue on international peacebuliding and development issues, with a particular focus on Africa and Latin America.

Michael will be speaking about his 15+ years experience of writing on Haiti, both before and after January’s earthquake. He will be discussing the quake itself as well as the political and economic struggles that preceded it and what should happen once the rubble has been cleared. There will be a Q&A session afterwards followed by music and mingling.

Spread the word, admission is free.

Show & Tell 7: Bees & Barrels & The Bard

S&T7
Friday, April 16th 2010 from 7:00pm

Why not take a time out from pre-election political posturing at our next Show & Tell this coming Friday? In the mix for this instalment we feature:

Bede Rajahram
Beekeepers are fanatical and we’d like to know what’s the hook. Bede, for example, started beekeeping in 1979 as a hobby and has loved it ever since. For the past three years it has been a full-time career for him, along with being the vice-president of the Trinidad and Tobago Bee Keepers Association.

So what makes bees buzz, and what’s the sweetest way to get honey? We’re looking forward to Bede (and his bees) sharing their passion with us.

Muhammad The Poet
We welcome Muhammad Abdul Quddus Muwakil, 26yrs old, and master of the spoken word. Muhammad believes simply that it is the responsibility of every Caribbean citizen to define and build identity as a source of pride for our people at home and abroad. His work spans self-evaluation, revolution, and questioning of the status quo. His performances are interactive and electrifing and we’re really looking forward to him sharing his lyrics.

Stephen Bowen & John Georges
Coopering (barrel-making without joints or glues) is an ancient tradition that is rarely practiced nowadays - these talented craftsmen are an exception to this trend. Stephen is a cooper of over 13 years vintage, while John (another Angostura man) is an expert in the processes of fermentation, distillation and aging and works with the Coopers to ensure that his rum is well secured in the casks they make.

Look out for a live demonstration of this craft, and hopefully a sampling of what comes out of the barrels!

Spread the word, admission is free.
Drinks are on us (while stocks last, then donations please…come on isn’t the recession meant to be over?) Music and afterparty hosted by our pals DJ Shy Guy and DJ Natmatics. Wakey wakey from the ever-generous Red Bull.

Hope you can make it!

Show & Tell 6: The Clay & The Cloth

S&T6
Thursday, 3rd December 2009 from 7:30pm

Need a break from constant conference content? Grab some fresh ideas at Abovegroup for our latest instalment of Show & Tell.

Adam Williams / Pottery
Trinidad-born Williams flitted between Trinidad and Barbados in his early years before attending the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto, Canada, where he majored in Drawing and Painting. In 2003 he took an introductory ceramics class and spent the remaining time at the college continuing with figurative drawing and painting along with ceramic studies.

Since 2004 he has shown his pieces at local galleries and small exhibits. In 2007 he was the first artist to show work at Alice Yard. Williams currently works and teaches from his Diego Martin studio; we are really excited about him sharing his ideas and approach with us.

Robert Young (The Cloth) / Fashion
The Cloth started as a collaborative some 22 years ago. For the last 15 years Robert Young has single handedly maintained the label, which has come to represent a unique, dynamic and always original Caribbean aesthetic.  Robert is perhaps best described as conscientious yet daring. Each collection represents a variation on a theme yet remains aware of global trends without losing sight of the context of Robert’s environment. His work embodies elements of traditional folk, the spirit of revolution and an interest in restoration and integration.  We’re looking forward to hearing more about his story and his thoughts on design at Show & Tell.

Spread the word, admission is free.
Drinks are on us (while stocks last, then donations please…cough it up, you know who you are!) Music and afterparty hosted by none other than DJ Irukandji. Vintage caffeine & taurine blend from Red Bull.

Hope you can make it!
